Yesterday we discussed some ways that God speaks to us. Guess what. God even speaks into our thoughts. But beware. All thoughts that come into your head are not from God. That’s why we have to be familiar with God’s character, through the Bible, the word of God. Judge carefully every word that answers your mind. Get it right.
Of course, many understand that God speaks even through nature.
But the basic reality of God is plain enough. Open your eyes and there it is! By taking a long and thoughtful look at what God has created, people have always been able to see what their eyes as such can’t see: eternal power, for instance, and the mystery of his divine being. Nobody has a good excuse. (From Romans 1:18-20, MSG)
His voice might be plain to one and not another. Think of Paul on the road to Damascus or Jesus in the following incident.
A voice came out of the sky: “I have glorified it, and I’ll glorify it again. “The listening crowd said, “Thunder!” Others said, “An angel spoke to him!” (From John 12:27-30, MSG)
God uses all sorts of things to speak. Remember Moses and the burning bush or Saul or Balaam’s talking donkey?
While you read scripture, God might stop you at a particular place or verse, or give someone else a word for you from scripture. The word of God is living and active. See Hebrews 4:12.
And he whispers. After all the big noise, Elijah heard a small whisper. Look at 1 Kings 19:12.
Check tomorrow for the final part of this devotional. Meanwhile…
Prayer- Lord, help us trust the way you want to get our attention and not fear a word from you. Amen.
