Keeping Up Appearances

This TV show is about Hyacinth, a woman who tries to make herself out to be more than she is. She longs to be royalty, but just can’t quite make it.

And here we are, as royal as anyone can be because we are children of the most high God.

Unfortunately, we don’t always live up to the standards that are ours.

Our hearts, our church buildings, our worldly presence is not always holy.

We invite folks to our buildings but we don’t help keep them tidy. We toss used paper towels on the floor, we expect the janitor to clean up our wrappings and coffee cups.

Our mouths are often the same. We gossip in public about the shortcomings of our pastor, our other church leaders and our buildings,

Perhaps we should be a little more like Hyacinth in Keeping up Appearances and strive to be a bit better than we are.

Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. (Matthew 23:26, NIV)

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1John 1:9, NIV)

Prayer-Lord, give us the grace and the smarts to live in a way that glorifies you. Amen.
