Hannah begged the Lord for a child and promised him to God. So as soon as her son Samuel was weaned, she took him to the temple and placed him in the care of Eli, the current high priest, who ministered with his very wicked sons.
Hannah willingly gave her son into the care of a man who had already proven himself to be a terrible father. What an act of obedience that was!
Now catch this. The word of the Lord was rare and precious in those days; there was no frequent or widely spread vision. (1 Samuel 3:1)
One night, Samuel thought he heard Eli calling him…so he ran to him. Says Eli, “Nope. I didn’t call you.” This happened three times. Finally Eli figured out that the Lord was calling Samuel. And he told him to answer this way. “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening!”
There’s a big difference between hearing and listening. Hearing acknowledges a sound but listening means to make a conscious effort, to concentrate.
How well do we listen when God speaks?
Prayer – Father, help us really listen to you and then obey what you say! Amen
