As I get (ever so slightly) older, I wonder if everything is working as it should. Take my ears. Are people not speaking so clearly or am I not hearing so well? In case you need to check your hearing as well, take a minute to answer this quiz.
Do others complain you have the TV too loud?
Do you have trouble hearing conversation in a noisy environment?
Does the doorbell or phone ring and you don’t hear it?
Do people seem to talk too fast or even mumble?
Do you have trouble figuring out where a noise is coming from?
Are phone conversations hard to understand?
Lots of yes answers indicate loudly that we should have our ears checked!
Whatever happens, may we never let our ears get as bad as the folks in Romans 11:8.
“God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that could not see and ears that could not hear, to this very day.” (NIV)
Or those in 2 Timothy 4:3-4:
For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. (NIV)
Prayer: Lord, when the worldly noise around us interferes with your voice, please–get our attention. In Christ. Amen.
