Did you know that reading is good for you? Oh, I don’t just mean reading business magazines and the like. I mean real change- your- life stuff.
Bury yourself as authors trudge through desert dust to small settlements; sharing the Gospel to unknown tribes. Gather strength reading about Elizabeth Elliott who moved with her children to live with the tribe who killed her husband.
I rejoice in the perseverance of Gladys Aylward, finding her way alone to the China mission field just because God said so. If you refuse to read, watch her story in the movie, The Inn of Sixth Happiness (a 1958 20th Century Fox film)
Or follow the exploits of Hudson Taylor in China.
All of these biographies encourage me to share Christ with my neighbour or give more than I think I can afford. I am not living their hardships. Mine are so miniscule in comparison.
Read the Bible. See yourself in the episode of David and Goliath. Sympathize with Elijah in his doubts and fears in spite of his faith. Learn to trust God for who he is and what he promises us.
Suffer with Christ as he journeys to the cross. Write your faith journey and be ready to share it.
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.(From 1 Peter 3:15-19)
