Do you pay any attention to what you sing?
Away in a manger reminds us of the stable, the manger, the atmosphere and the peace of Christ’s birth and even a call for us to be in heaven with him.
The First Noel is a reminder of the angel’s announcements, shepherds and sheep, the king of Israel newly born, that brilliant star and even the wise men, following the star to Bethlehem or wherever it might lead. It speaks of the gifts from the wisemen and the blood Christ would share on our behalf,
O Holy Night speaks again of the stars and the difference Christ’s birth brings to us; and the love God teaches us to act on
Silent Night, oh the beauty of peace it offers. Again, we hear of shepherds and heavenly hosts and God’s grace.
I could go on, but only this I ask of you. Pay attention to what you sing. You are acknowledging your faith. I trust you will believe both what you say and what you sing.
Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. (Psalm 96:1-3)
