Smart Alecs

When Jesus was teaching in the temple, the chief priests, scribes and Sadducees heckled him with smart alec questions. They collaborated on ways to interrupt and disrupt and dispute his teaching authority. (See Luke 20:1)

“Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,” they said. “Who gave you this authority?” (Luke 20:2 NIV)

Are we ever smart alecs? Do we scoff at our leaders during sermons, songs and prayer?

We think our ‘clever’ comments go unnoticed but someone is looking and listening. Our words won’t stay hidden forever. Shame follows exposure.

Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. (Hebrews 4:13 NIV)

Prayer – Lord, use our mouths to encourage and edify, not to belittle. Amen
