Still Home

Get out the crock pot.  Add four cups of boiling water, 1-2 cups of dried split peas and a chopped onion. Toss in that leftover hambone you saved in the freezer after the family dinner.

Set the crock pot on low and go away for a few hours till all the meat easily comes off the bone. Remove the bone. Chop up the hunks of meat now in the soup. Serve with crusty bread or fresh biscuits. Add water if the soup is too thick. Freeze leftovers. That huge pot of soup cost only pennies to make.

And that’s good because some of us have to squeeze our pennies a bit tighter now to make them go farther. In Canada we are actually squeezing nickels because the government stopped making pennies quite a while ago. You see they cost more than a penny to make and so they were eliminated. Now we round totals up or down to the nearest five cents.

I wonder what life would be like if God did the same? Your sins come to 365 so we are rounding that up to 400. Or you weren’t as bad as we thought so we are rounding you down from 205 to 200 sins in all.

Oh, but God does better than that friends.

As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. (Psalm 103:12, KJV)

He doesn’t treat us as our sins deserve, nor pay us back in full for our wrongs. As high as heaven is over the earth, so strong is his love to those who fear him. And as far as sunrise is from sunset, he has separated us from our sins. (Psalm 103:12, MSG)

No penny ante living for our God, the all forgiving, never ending God of love.

Prayer-Father, we exclaim your goodness in all directions. There is no rounding up or down with you and we say thank you and Amen!
