The Sanctification of Joseph and of Christians: Similitude’s Between Jesus and Joseph

Joseph’s story is an incredible one of his sanctification. In fact, Joseph is a forerunner or archetype of Jesus Christ and Joseph‘s sanctification is a picture of ours. There are so many striking similarities that you see in Joseph’s life that paralleled Jesus work and ministry in the saving and sanctifying of His people. Here’s what I mean:

Joseph was sold out and betrayed by his brothers for 20 pieces of silver which was about the selling price of a slave in that day.

Jesus was sold out and betrayed by His people, and one of His disciples, for 30 pieces of silver, the selling price of a slave in that day.

Joseph saved His people and nation from starvation and rescued them literally from death.

Jesus saved His people and nation and rescued them from eternal death.

Joseph interpreted the dreams of the Pharaoh and looked into the future with accuracy.

Jesus interpreted the Old Testament prophecies (in fact he fulfilled a great number of them) and looked in the future with perfect accuracy.

Joseph was second in command only to the Pharaoh, a type of King.

Jesus was second in command only to God the Father, The KING.

Joseph was tempted by Potiphar’s wife and yet without sin.

Jesus was tempted by the devil and yet without sin.

Joseph’s faithfulness and loyalty to the Pharaoh was rewarded by being put in command of all of Egypt, second only to the Pharaoh.

Jesus faithfulness and loyalty to the Father was rewarded by being put in command of all nations, second only to God the Father.

Joseph was wrongfully charged and condemned without cause and being completely innocent of the charges.

Jesus was wrongfully charged and condemned without a cause and being completely innocent of the charges.

Joseph dreamed that they were binding sheaves in the field, and their sheaves bowed down to his sheaf another dream, in which the sun, the moon, and eleven stars bowed down.

Jesus is called the Bread of Life and the sun, moon and eleven stars would bow to Him as He is Lord of Creation.

Joseph’s name means “increase”.

Of Jesus it is said, of the increase of His government, there will be no end (Ish.9:7).

Joseph’s work of establishing grain reserves for the coming famine saved not only his family (someday to be the nation of Israel) but Egypt and the known world at the time.

Jesus’ work will save the entire known world by being the Bread of Life.

Joseph becomes the perfect model of holiness.

Jesus was also the perfect model of holiness when He came to the earth in a human body.

Joseph’s sanctification and obedience was able to save his entire family and eventually, ensure that the nation of Israel would be saved from starvation and death.

Likewise, Jesus’ sanctification and obedience to The Father, ensures that God’s entire family of Christians will be saved from starvation and death. That starvation being prevented by the Bread of Life and eternal life is ensured, by Jesus Christ Himself.  And Joseph showed his santification by obedience and trustworthyness, even in his being falsely accused. What a great model for us…even better is what Jesus' modeled.
