Who hasn’t quoted this verse to ‘encourage’ a fellow Christian?
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13, NIV)
Why does it so often come out sounding like this? God never gives you more than you can bear.
The truth is we won’t be TEMPTED beyond what we can endure (so much for telling everyone I can’t resist chocolate!). We are strong enough to resist any temptation with God’s help.
However, troubles, unlike temptation are often more than we can stand. Check out these phrases.
Suffering beyond our own strength, afraid we wouldn’t survive. (2 Corinthians 1:8)
Worn out, crushed, miserable. (Psalms 38:8 CEB)
The journey is too much for you. (1 Kings 19:7)
I’ve certainly felt like that before…and the trouble was too much to bear… until I let God share my burden.
Prayer – Lord, even now someone is reading this and carrying a burden too big for their shoulders. Lord, please help them through it. Amen
