Why are we fighting over wearing a mask? It’s for our own protection, after all. Perhaps the problem is that we have been wearing the wrong masks for too long and have confused the two.
By this time the crowd, unwieldy and stepping on each other’s toes, numbered into the thousands.
But Jesus’ primary concern was his disciples. He said to them, “Watch yourselves carefully so you don’t get contaminated with Pharisee yeast, Pharisee phoniness. You can’t keep your true self hidden forever; before long you’ll be exposed.
You can’t hide behind a religious mask forever; sooner or later the mask will slip and your true face will be known. You can’t whisper one thing in private and preach the opposite in public; the day’s coming when those whispers will be repeated all over town. (Luke 12:1-2, MSG)
You can’t use legal cover to mask a moral failure. (Matthew 5:32, MSG)
When I see someone not wearing a mask, I think “that person doesn’t care if I die and I guess they don’t care if they die as well.”
Jesus said, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence.’ This is the most important, the first on any list. But there is a second to set alongside it: ‘Love others as well as you love yourself.’ These two commands are pegs; everything in God’s Law and the Prophets hangs from them.” (Matthew 22:37-40, MSG)
Prayer- Lord, help us to endure a little discomfort for the sake of the others around us. Amen.
