A friend gave a mother an egg for her sick child. The child begged to eat it, for he was so hungry. “No, no.,” said mother. “The egg is our future. We will get a hen to hatch it into a chick.”
“Please then can we eat chicken?” cried the child?
“No, certainly not.” said mother. We will grow that chicken and it will lay many eggs.
The desperate child cried out. “Mother shall I finally have an egg to eat?”
“Of course not,” said mother. “She will hatch them and we will have many chickens and then we will sell the chickens and buy a calf.”
” Surely then I might eat some chicken or have an egg?” asked the sick child.
“Silly boy,” replied mother. The calf will grow and have more calves and we will sell them and buy a field. We will be rich!”
Excitedly, she clapped her hands and in doing so, shattered the egg.
We can dream all the dreams we like, but doing nothing toward fulfilling that dream is a waste of time and talent. Don’t give up living now for the promises of a future tomorrow.
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. (Ephesians 5:15-16)
